How to Use Rakuten to Get Cashback
Money consciousness has always been important to me. Knowing where I am putting every penny that I’ve earned has helped me to have more control over my life, especially during college and when my income is less than desirable.
One way that I keep my spending in shape is by following the golden rule of frugality: never pay full price. For anything.
That’s why I use Rakuten to get cashback and the best deals on my online purchases. With a few easy steps, you can earn cashback, too.
Let’s talk about how to use Rakuen to save pennies, or even dollars, on your everyday purchases.
Getting Cashback with Rakuten
Two years ago, I started using a site called Ebates to get cashback on most of my online purchases. Recently, Ebates changed its name to Rakuten.
Basically, Rakuten earns a commission for referring customers to thousands of stores that you you are already shopping at. They take the money that they own and split it with you. This means you can earn cashback on purchases from Amazon, Walmart, Macy’s, Groupon, American Eagle and more.
Most of the time, you can get up to 10% cashback on your everyday purchases, but sometimes they run specials where most of the popular stores offer 15-25% off.
Personally, I have made over $200 from Rakuten since I started using it. This doesn’t even count the money I’ve saved from using their coupons and promo codes.
Since I got started, I have earned over $210. Every period, they send you a “Big Fat Check” in the mail or directly to your PayPal. I opt for PayPal payments, but my mom gets checks in the mail.

Rakuten is super easy to use. First, you sign up then you shop then you get paid. Easy, peasy.
Okay, so maybe it’s slightly more complicated than that, so I am going to break it down for you.

- Wait to be redirected to the store you’ve chosen
- Look for a pop-up box that says “__% cashback is now active”
- Shop ‘til you drop
- Proceed to checkout as you normally would
To make things even easier, you can download a Chrome plugin for Rakuten that lets you know when the site you are on has cashback waiting to be snagged or if there is a promo code to save you some money.
